A few months back I started seeing promotions for “Saturday Night Live Korea” and I was very curious what this was going to be. I still haven’t seen an episode, but I’m not sure if there are any subbed ones being posted online anyway. I did, however, watch some clips of Youtube just out of curiosity and was creeped out by how eerily similar the format is.
The cold open features a cast member yelling “It’s Saturday night!!!!’, the cast credits are comprised of members engaging in night time shenanigans around Seoul, and the host comes out for a cheery monologue on a set identical to the NBC stage in NYC. They really thought of everything. Break transitions are ushered in by an artsy-witty photo of the host and there is even “Weekend Update Korea”. The extent to which SNL Korea has mimicked the original just blows my mind and I can’t wait to watch an entire episode to see how the rest holds up.
